Utah Defeats UCSB, Improves to 14-1

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Utah men’s tennis team defeated UC Santa Barbara earlier today with a score of 5-2. With this win, the No. 40 Utes improve to an overall record of 14-1.

“Gutsy performance by our guys today,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu. “Great win to get us to 14-1 and keep us on track to reach our goals.”

The Utes started the day off by taking the doubles point, giving them the early advantage. Dan Little and Azat Hankuliyev were victorious at the No. 3 spot against UCSB’s Joseph Guillin and Victor Krustev, with a final score of 6-3. Joe Woolley and Egbert Weverink then sealed the doubles point with a win on the No. 2 court over Simon Freund and Joseph Rotheram, with a score of 7-6.

In singles, Dan Little got things rolling with a win at the No. 2 position, beating out Simon Freund with a score of 6-4, 6-2. David Micevski then followed with a win of his own at the No. 1 position, cruising by Nicolas Moreno De Alboran, 6-4, 6-1. Then to ensure the victory for the Utes, Joe Woolley earned a win at the No. 6 spot over Hironori Koyanagi, with a final score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. Santiago Sierra recorded the final victory for the Utes at the No. 5 spot, defeating Victor Krustev with a score of 6-4, 6-4.

The Utes will be back in action next week, as they will make a road trip to Norfolk, Virginia. They will face off against Old Dominion on Friday, March 2nd, at 11 a.m., followed by a match against Virginia Commonwealth University on Saturday, March 3rd, at 10 a.m., to wrap up competition for the weekend.

Utah Men’s Tennis Tops New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Utah men’s tennis team defeated the University of New Mexico earlier today with a final score of 4-2, improving to 13-1 overall on the season.

“What a great team performance today. To beat a good New Mexico in Albuquerque is such a great feat,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu. “We fought like lions today and we will need another Herculean effort again tomorrow against UCSB.”

In doubles play, the team consisting of Joe Woolley and Egbert Weverink defeated Ricky Hernandez Tong and Dominic West at the No. 2 position, with a score of 6-4. Dan Little and Azat Hankuliyev then sealed the doubles point for the Utes with a win on the No. 3 court against Sean Baklini and Stepan Holis, 6-4.

Randy Cory started things off at the No. 5 position with a win in singles against New Mexico’s Tim Buttner with a final score of 7-6, 6-2. Dan Little then put in a victory of his own at the No. 1 spot against Bart Van Leijsen, with a score of 7-6, 6-4. Then to seal the victory for the University of Utah men’s tennis team, Egbert Weverink edged out Jorge Escutia on the No. 4 court, with a final score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The Utes will be back in action tomorrow against UC Santa Barbara in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the match set to start at 1 p.m. MST.

Utes Announce Commitments of Gavelin and McCallie

Head Men’s Tennis Coach Roeland Brateanu today announced it’s 2018 recruiting class with commitments from 4-star recruit Paul McCallie and Swedish U21 National Champion Mathias Gavelin.

“We are extremely excited to announce the commitments of Mathias and Paul,” said Brateanu. “Both are very talented and hard working young men that fit great into our program and we can’t wait to start working with them.”

Mathias Gavelin from Stockholm, Sweden will join the Utes in the fall of 2018. He ranked as high as No. 3 in the Swedish junior rankings, but earned his biggest career tournament victory by winning the 2017 Swedish Junior Championships Under 21.

“I chose the University of Utah because of the coaches and my campus experience during my official recruiting visit,” said Gavelin. “I believe that the University of Utah can further develop my tennis game and help me to be a successful student-athlete.”

Gavelin’s best career win is over Christoffer Solberg (830 ATP) and is currently has a UTR  of 13.07.

4-Star Recruit Paul McCallie

Paul McCallie, a 4-star recruit out of Atlanta, GA will also join the Utes in the fall of 2018. In 2017 he was one of 31 players to be named to the USTA Junior Leadership Team and also was the recipient of the USTA Team Spirit Award at the USTA Spring Team Championships.

“I’m honored to be selected to play for the University of Utah, “said McCallie. “The decision to attend Utah was based on the fact that Utah has many strong academic programs, in addition to being in the Pac-12 Conference. I also feel strongly that Coach Brateanu and his staff will enable me to continue developing my tennis talent and provide an environment to improve my leadership abilities on and off the court.”

McCallie has a UTR of 11.39 and has ranked as high as No. 27 in the USTA National Rankings.

Utes Wrap Up Gopher Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS – The Utah men’s tennis team completed play this afternoon at the Gopher Invitational at the University of Minnesota with Egbert Weverink and David Micevski finishing in fifth place.

Teaming together for the first time this weekend, Micevski and Weverink were able to rally and defeat Grayson Broadus and Richard Ciamarra of Notre Dame. After dropping the doubles point, 7-5, Weverink crushed Ciamarra in singles action, 6-1, 6-4 to even the match. It came down to Micevski, who dropped the first set, 3-6, but rebounded to win the second 6-2 and then capture an exhilarating tiebreak, 12-10 to secure the victory for the Utes.

Over in the Gold draw, Joe Woolley and Randy Cory continued their solid play, beating Stefan Lalovic and Pedro Platzeck of Boise State. After winning the doubles point, 6-4, Cory suffered a 6-3, 6-1 setback to Platzeck. However, Woolley was cruising in his singles match and earned the win, 6-4, 6-2, over Lalovic.

Utes Wrap Up First Day of Gopher Invitational 

MINNEAPOLIS – Utah Men’s tennis concluded the first day of action at the Gopher Invitational. Dan Little and David Micevski advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw (Maroon) while Santiago Sierra and Chase Stoner also earned wins (Gold bracket).
Micevski and Little won their doubles match against Dartmouth, 7-5 and Micevski sealed progress with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Peter Conklin. Little earned the sweep by rallying to top Casey Ross, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Over in the Gold draw, Sierra and Stoner advanced past a squad from Wisconsin. After gaining the doubles point, 7-5, both Utah players cruised to singles victories to sweep the team of Badgers.
Joe Woolley and Randy Cory were able to win their doubles point against a team from Dartmouth, 7-5, but then lost both singles matches in straight sets.
The Sierra/Stoner and Woolley/Cory combos both won their doubles matches in the second round with the singles matches to be completed tomorrow.

Utes Travel to Minneapolis for Gopher Invitational 

Minneapolis, Minnesota- The Utah Men’s Tennis program will travel to Minneapolis for the 2017 Gopher Invitational.
The Utes will be sending Randy Cory, Dan Little, David Micevski, Slava Shainyan, Santiago Sierra, Chase Stoner, Egbert Weverink and Joe Woolley to compete against teams from Boise State, Dartmouth, Denver, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Oregon, and Wisconsin.
Tournament Format

The tournament features a unique format: the Maroon draw is a 16-team compass bracket with pairs competing in a doubles match followed by two singles matches against their foes in a best-of-three format with each victory providing one “point” for the tournament. The team with the most points moves on to the next round.

The Gold draw features two flights of round robin play. After a round-robin format, the pairs will be split up based on results for Sunday. Respective finishers with compete with each other in their next pod.

Schedule
Friday’s matches will begin at 9 a.m. with Saturday and Sunday set to begin at 8 a.m. tentatively. Friday will consist of two doubles rounds and one singles match for all players. Saturday will consist of two singles match and one doubles match. Sunday will consist of one round of each.

Weverink Wins ITA Singles Crown

PROVO, UT – Egebert Weverink captured the singles title in the consolation bracket of the ITA Mountain Regionals as Utah Men’s Tennis wrapped up play on Saturday afternoon.
Weverink, who entered the event unseeded, won six matches in a row after dropping his opener in the main draw. The senior from the Netherlands won four matches in straight sets, including two today, and the first set in a fifth where his opponent eventually retired. 
He now sits at 10-2 on the season after two fall events. A few weeks ago, he and teammate Joe Woolley won the doubles title at the Utah Intercollegiate.

Utah concludes its fall schedule with a trip to Minneapolis for the Gopher Invitational Nov. 3-5
