ITA Regionals Day 1 Recap

PROVO – Four Utes moved into the third round of the main singles draw after day one of the USTA/ITA Mountain Regionals at BYU. The Utah men’s tennis team will also have five competitors in singles consolation play tomorrow, while all four doubles teams remain in action, three in the main draw.

Dan Little, playing as the No. 1 seed, rolled through Air Force’s Paul Hendrix, 6-0, 6-1 to get things going in singles play and No. 2 seed David Micevski cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Idaho’s Peter Shin

In the nightcap, Little brushed aside Aditya Vashistha of Utah State, 6-2, 6-1 and Micevski was pushed by Utah State’s Felipe Acosta before earning a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 contest to close play around midnight.

No. 7 seed Slava Shainyan mashed Max Korkh of Montana, 6-3, 6-2 and then after a first set tiebreak, put down Jonathan Morales of Southern Utah, 7-6, 6-2 to continue his impressive start to the season. Shainyan remains undefeated with a perfect 6-0 mark.

Randy Cory was taken to the limit in his straight-set win over Weber State’s Bo Han Li, 7-5, 7-5 and then came through with an upset of the No. 27 seed, New Mexico State’s Stjin De Haan, 6-4, 6-3

Egbert Weverink opened the tournament with an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Southern Utah’s Remus Cope but was then knocked off by the No. 6 seed, Dominic West of New Mexico, 6-3, 6-3.

Chase Stoner went to a tiebreak before defeating Joaquim Espnoza of Montana State, 6-5, 7-6 but then dropped his evening match to the No. 17 seed, Northern Arizona’s Lucas Taylor, 6-1, 6-2

Azat Hankuliyev was the only Ute to earn a three-set victory in the first round, coming up with an impressive rally to defeat Southern Utah’s Conor Todoff, 5-7, 7-6, 6-1. However, he was unable to win against tougher competition under the lights, falling to the No. 8 seed, Utah State’s Jaime Barajas, 6-4, 6-2

In doubles action, all three seeded pairs, Little/Woolley (No. 5), Weverink/Micevski (No. 9) and Shainyan/Cory (No. 16), notched easy victories to advance into tomorrow’s second round. The ITA Mountatin Regionals resume with doubles play at 9 a.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Fans can park in the lot near the BYU outdoor tennis courts on the corner of 800 North and 150 East throughout the four-day event.
