Provo, UT- The University of Utah Men’s Tennis team (6-1) will travel to Provo to take on the BYU Cougars (5-3) on Thursday evening in the Deseret First Duel. Both the Utes and the Cougars are coming off a pair of wins this past weekend over Denver and NAU.
“Coming to Utah, all people talk about is beating BYU” said Junior Eggy Weverink. “It was a great experience to play them last year although we could not pick up a win. Last year motivated me, as well as the team to go out and bring this one home.”
The Utes lost a heartbreaker at Eccles Tennis Center last year to BYU 5-2. BYU returns 3 starters from last year including senior captain Keaton Cullimore, and Jacob Sullivan. 4 Utes from last years match will be starting Thursday night.
First serve will be at 5:30 pm MT.
The Utes are coming off a trio of victories this past weekend over Denver, NAU, and Montana State. On Saturday, David Micevski defeated Diego Rocha in straight sets at number 1 singles. This marked the first time a Ute defeated Rocha. Against Northern Arizona and Montana State, Azat Hankuliyev and Slava Shainyan went 2-0 on Sunday with key wins in doubles play, along with Egbert Weverink going 2-0 in doubles as well. In singles action against Montana State, Weverink, Little, Wooley, and Micevski all quickly finished singles play by winning in straight sets.
Similar to Utah, the Cougars defeated Denver (4-3), NAU (5-2), and Montana State (6-1). The Cougars are coming into the Holy War on a 3 match win streak. Doubles tandem John Pearce and Jacob Sullivan were named WCC Doubles Team of the Week this past week. The Cougars return 3 starters from last year, Keaton Cullimore, Jacob Sullivan, and John Pearce. The Cougars also picked up 2 Utah locals Sam Tullis, and Matthew Pearce both coming off LDS missions.
