Columbus, OH – For the first time in 6 years the University of Utah men’s tennis team has defeated Denver University, 4-0. The Utes and Pioneers competed against each other Sunday morning in Columbus, Ohio as part of the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
“We haven’t beaten Denver for a long time, so I’m really happy for the guys to come up with a win,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu. “This was a lot closer of a match than the score indicates. Denver played some very tough tennis and competed very hard.”
Utah started the day off earning the doubles point by winning at No. 2, 6-4, and No. 3 doubles, 6-4. The Utes’ top doubles team of Joe Woolley and Dan Little was tied at 5-5 when the doubles point was clinched.
In singles play, the Utes managed to win four close first sets, but the Pioneers continue to fight hard until the very end. Dan Little defeated Yannick James at No. 2 singles, 7-6(2), 6-4, while freshman Slava Shainyan defeated Wyatt Lovera 7-6, 6-3 to put the Utes up 3-0.
Junior Santiago Sierra clinched the match for Utah with a come from behind victory over Alex Gasson, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Parker McGuiness and David Micevski were both leading their matches, while Joe Woolley was trailing Pedro Fernandez Del Valle.
The Utes and Pioneers will square off again in a regular season scheduled match Saturday February 4, 2017 at 1pm at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
