Kazan, Russia – After winning the ITF Grade 2 doubles championships in the Ozerov Cup in May, Utah’s newest signee, Slava Shainyan, continues to impress. The Moscow, Russia native won three rounds in the qualifying draw of the Russia F2 Futures in Kazan, thereby qualifying for the main draw.
“I’m really happy that I started playing Futures,” said Shainyan. “No matter if I win or lose, I know I’m moving in the right direction.”
Shainyan cruised through the first round with a straight set victory over Nikita Morozov, 6-1, 6-4, but had his work cut out for him in the 2nd round against 5th seeded Shonigmatjon Shofayziyev (Uzbekistan). After losing the first set, Shainyan turned on the jets for a 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1 victory.
In the third and final round of qualifying he defeated Shalva Dzhanashia (Russia), 6-3, 6-4 to qualify for the main draw where he will face Vitaly Kozyukov. Kozyukov is a Futures veteran who has ranked as No. 629 on the ATP World Rankings.
