San Fransisco, CA- On Wednesday, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott announced the All-Academic Teams for the sport of mens tennis. 4 Utah Utes were announced to this elite group of men.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and compete in at least 50% of the team’s matches.
Senior Matt Cowley, and Sophomore Santiago Sierra were announced to the Pac-12 First Team All-Academic. Matt graduated this spring with a 3.51 GPA, and a degree in Psychology. Santiago completed his sophomore year at the U with a 3.60 GPA, and is continuing his pursuit of a Chemical Engineering degree.
Junior Parker McGuiness made the 2nd team with a 3.55 GPA. Parker will graduate next year with a Business degree. Also among the 2nd team, is UCLA’s Mackenzie McDonald, who recently won the NCAA Championship in both singles and doubles, a very rare accomplishment.
Sophomore Johan Jonhagen made the Honorable Mention team.
“Congratulations to our four honorees,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu. “As a team, the guys did a wonderful job for us on and off the court. It’s nice to see hard work being rewarded.”
The Utes are among 4 Pac-12 teams to have players make both the first, and second team, joining Stanford, Oregon, and UCLA.
