SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Men’s Tennis dropped its final home match this afternoon to No. 4 UCLA, 4-0. It was the last contest at the Eccles Tennis Center for a pair of seniors, Matt Cowley and Jamey Swiggart.
“I’m just so grateful and honored to have this opportunity to represent Utah,” Cowley said. “My roots are here in Salt Lake at this university and to have almost 30 friends and family watch me have arguably the best match of my career, it’s amazing.”
“I started out pretty nervous because it didn’t set in until this morning that this was my last match here,” Swiggart added. “I just wanted to enjoy the moment with this group of great guys. That settled me down, thinking about living in the present, and I gave every ounce of energy out there today.”
“I’m proud of our seniors and the way they competed today against a team that will definitely contend for a national title,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu. “Matt and Jamey have come a long way and have represented not only this team, but this university, with great class and dignity.”
UCLA snagged the doubles point with a pair of wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 position. The Bruins feature the No. 5-ranked doubles pairing in the nation, McKenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki, and they topped Dan Little and Cowley, 6-2. Karue Sell and Joseph Digulio topped Parker McGuiness and Swiggart, 6-4.
In singles action, Cowley led McDonald, the ninth-ranked singles competitor in the nation, 6-3, 5-5, before the match was halted in favor of the Bruins. Redlicki, ranked No. 47 in the nation, topped David Micevski, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 position for a 2-0 lead. No. 77 Karue Sell beat Egbert Weverink, 6-3, 6-2 and Digulio finished off Swiggart, 6-4, 6-4 to end the match.
