Utah Falls to No. 15 Cal in a Heartbreaker

Salt Lake City, UT – In the first Pac-12 match of the year, the University of Utah men’s tennis team (16-4, 0-1) was edged by the visiting California Golden Bears (9-3, 1-0) at the Eccles Tennis Center on Friday, 4-3.

“I’m very proud of our competitive spirit today,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu, “We had a lot of opportunities to beat a very good Cal team, but we let it slip out of our hands. The good thing to take from this match is that we have now shown that we can play with these teams and if we work a little harder, and pay better attention to the details, we have it in us to beat these teams.”

Utah started the day off very strong in doubles play to take an early lead against the 15th ranked Golden Bears. At the No. 2 spot, Freddie McGeehan and Egbert Weverink secured a break at 4-4 to take a 5-4 lead. The Utah tandem then held serve the next game to win the match 6-4. Johan Jonhagen and Jamey Swiggart fought to a tiebreak at No. 3 doubles, where they routed Mads Engsted and J.T. Nishimura 7-0 to clinch the doubles point for the Utes.

In singles play, the Utes extended their lead to 2-0 after sophomore Freddie McGeehan cruised past Cal’s Mads Engsted, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot. The Golden Bears answered with wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions, evening the score at 2-2. 17th ranked Andre Goransson earned a comeback victory over Utah’s Dan Little, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, to temporarily give California the lead. Freshman David Micevski  squared the score up at 3-3 following a gutsy win versus Filip Bergevi at the No. 2 spot, 7-6(5), 6-4. At the No. 6 spot, senior Jamey Swiggart fell in a nail-biter to Cal’s J.T. Nishimura, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4, which clinched the overall match for the Golden Bears.

Utah hosts No. 43 Stanford on Sunday at noon at the Eccles Tennis Center. Parking in the lot east of Guardsman Way and admissions are free
