Denver, Colorado – The 68th ranked University of Utah men’s tennis team (14-3) split two matches against ranked opponents in Denver this weekend. The Utes were edged by the 48th ranked Denver Pioneers on Friday, 5-2; however, Utah bounced back on Saturday with a 5-2 victory against the 59th ranked Penn Quakers in a neutral site bout.

“I am very proud of the team today to bounce back and beat a very tough Penn squad,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu.

Versus the Denver Pioneers, Utah looked like it would grab the doubles point after taking the first match at the No. 1 position when Dan Little and Matt Cowley defeated David Fox and Alex Gasson, 7-5. However, Utes were narrowly edged in the other two matches, 7-6, and fell behind the Pioneers, 1-0.

The Pioneers went ahead 3-0 as they won at No. 1 and No. 2 in singles action. Cowley fell to Henry Craig, 6-2, 6-1 while David Micevski was beaten, 6-3, 6-1 by Diogo Rocha. Utah got on the board when Freddie McGeehan won at the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-4 over Jesse Ruder-Hook, but Egbert Weverink was knocked off at the No. 5 spot by Yannik James, 6-4, 6-3, to seal the match for Denver.

Utah fought hard in doubles play against the Penn Quakers, but ultimately fell in a similar fashion. After Egbert Weverink and Freddie McGeehan secured a 6-3 win at the No. 3 position, the Utes dropped both matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Singles play told a different story for Utah. At the No. 5 spot, Parker McGuiness returned the momentum to the Utes’ favor by gliding past Nicholai Westergaard, 6-3, 6-1. With the score at one-all, Matt Cowley and Dan Little  bolstered the Utes at No. 1 and No. 3 singles with 6-3, 6-2 wins. Egbert Weverink clinched the match for Utah with a thrilling comeback, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 5 position.

Utah has next week off and will host UNLV and Loyola Marymount on March 18/19.
