Utes Overcome No. 59 Boise State, Host No. 71 South Alabama Tomorrow

Senior Jamey Swiggart clinched the win for Utah at No. 6 Singles

Salt Lake City, UT – The University of Utah men’s tennis team (10-0) accomplished something Friday night that it had not done in eight years: defeat the Boise State Broncos (5-3). Utah improved to 10-0 on the season with a thrilling 5-2 victory over the Broncos. The Utes host No. 71 South Alabama (7-2) tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in hopes of extending their record setting start to the season.

“We started off very poorly today, but fought our way back into the match,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu. “We beat a very good Boise State team. The guys can be proud of themselves.”

In doubles play, the sophomore tandem of Egbert Weverink and Santiago Sierra provided the Utes an early win at the No. 2 spot over the Bronco’s Abe Hewko and Lewis Roskilly. Utah was then edged at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, as Boise State escaped with the doubles point.

Down 1-0, Utah rallied valiantly in singles play. Sophomore Egbert Weverink even the score at 1-1 after breezing past Abe Hewko at the No. 4 spot, 6-1, 6-3. The Broncos evened the score after Brian Foley secured a win at the No. 2 position. Freshman David Micevski responded to earn the Utes their second point at the No. 3 spot against Kyle Butters, 6-4, 6-2. Matt Cowley fought a tough battle in the first set at No. 1 singles, escaping with a win in a tiebreak. He then cruised in the second set, 6-2, to defeat Toby Mitchell and propell Utah into the lead, 3-2. Senior Jamey Swiggart sent the Utes to 10-0 after clinching a 7-6(6), 6-3 win over Pedro Platzcek. At the No. 6 position, Santiago Sierra defeated Lewis Roskilly 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to make the final tally 5-2 in the Utes favor.

Utah is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, February 13 against No. 71 South Alabama at the Eccles Tennis Center. As always, admission is free and fans can park in the lot East of Guardsman Way free of charge. Live stats are available here.
