Johan “JJ” Jonhagen reached the finals without losing a single set so far. The Swede defeated Sebastian Edin (Idaho State), 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals, followed by a victory in the semifinals over Bjorn Scheepbouwer, 7-5, 6-3.
No. 1 seeded Santiago Sierra started his day off with a win over Kellen Bates (Montana State), 6-3, 6-4, but had a close call against Idaho Sate’s Francis Filipovich in semifinal action. The Ute dropped the first set, but fought his way back to a 3-set victory, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
It marks the second time this year that two Utes will square off in a championship match. Earlier in the year, sophomore Egbert Weverink defeated fellow Ute Matt Cowley to claim the Montana State Tournament title.
Prior to their final match on Sunday, Jonhagen and Sierra will team up to play in the doubles final against Barlow/Chen (Weber State). The Utes reached the final after beating James/Edgecombe (Montana State), 6-2.
