Tulsa, OK – Where Saturday was a successful day for the Utes, Sunday proved to be more difficult. All three participants were eliminated from play in the pre-qualifying draw at the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“Today was a disappointing day, because we mostly beat ourselves,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu. “I expect better from our student-athletes, but this is yet another learning opportunity.”
Sophomore Freddie McGeehan and senior Matt Cowley started the day off on a cold Sunday morning with two losses. McGeehan lost to Mateus Silva (Purdue), 6-0, 6-3, while Cowley lost to Eduardo Mena (Tennessee Tech) 7-5, 6-2.
Dan Little was the only Ute to fight his way through the 2nd round with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kyle Dunn (Valporaiso), but the freshman was unable to overcome Niclas Braun (Mississippi State) in the 3rd round, losing 6-0, 6-4.
Parker McGuiness is the only Ute left standing. The junior will start his bid for the tournament title in the 1st round of the qualifying draw Monday morning at 9.00am when he faces Stjepan Sisko (Toledo).
