Tulsa, OK – The University of Utah men’s tennis team started the 2015 ITA All-American Championships off successfully, remaining undefeated during the 1st round of the pre-qualifying draw.
“We beat 2 players out of the top 100 of the ITF and still have all players active in the draw, so it definitely was a nice way to start the tournament,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu. “But it’s just the first day and we have set our goals higher than just reaching the 2nd round.”
Senior Matt Cowley earned the biggest win of the day defeating Daniel Santos (University of Tulsa), 6-4, 6-3. Santos ranked as high as No. 26 on the ITF World Junior Rankings and competed at the French Open and Wimbledon. Cowley will dual Eduardo Mena (Tennessee Tech) for a spot in the 3rd round tomorrow morning at 8.00am.
Sophomore Freddie McGeehan also earned himself a top 100 ITF win with a victory over Texas Longhorn Julian Zlobinsky, 6-3, 7-5. Zlobinsky ranked as high as No. 90 in the world. McGeehan will battle Mateus Silva (Purdue) at 8.00am tomorrow morning.
Freshman Dan Little continued his winning ways, easily putting aside Sam Giammalva (Texas A&M), 6-2, 6-2. Little will continue his first ever All-Amerian Championship appearance at 10.00am Sunday, facing Kyle Dunn (Valporaiso).
Parker McGuiness will start his 1st round match in the qualifying draw on Monday.
