The University of Utah men’s tennis team (10-8, 0-2 Pac-12) travels to Los Angeles this weekend to face No. 5 USC Friday at 3 p.m. PT and No. 15 UCLA Saturday at 1 p.m. PT. Follow the Utes match versus USC with live streaming video and UCLA on the Pac-12 Mountain network.

Last weekend, the Utes dropped Pac-12 road matches against No. 30 California and No. 43 Stanford. Utah, 3-6 against nationally ranked opponents this season, looks to rebound behind Sophomore Parker McGuiness, who has Utah’s best dual-match singles record of 11-5, and Senior Cedric Willems and junior Matt Cowley, who hold the Utes’ best dual-match doubles record of 10-4.

The 51st ranked Utes fell to UCLA at home last year, 4-0. After narrowly winning the doubles point, the Bruins clinched the match by securing the Nos. 2, 4 and 5 singles matches.

UCLA is 10-0 at home this season and began conference play last weekend with home victories against No. 51 Oregon and No. 56 Washington.  No. 4 Mackenzie McDonald, No. 26 Dennis Mkrtchian and No. 121 Martin Redlicki lead the bruins in singles. McDonald holds a 9-1 singles record this season at the No. 1 position.

Last year, Slim Hamza captured one of the biggest upsets in Utah history; he defeated USC’s seventh-ranked Raymond Sarmiento at the No. 1 position, 6-0, 6-2. No. 51 Utah was ultimately defeated by the No. 2 Trojans in Salt Lake City, 4-1.

This season, No. 5 USC is 8-1 at home, including conference victories over No. 56 Washington and No. 51 Oregon. Six Trojans are nationally ranked in singles play: No. 9 Yannick Hanfmann, No. 19 Roberto Quiroz, No. 35 Johnny Wang, No. 66 Max DeVroome, No. 68 Nick Crystal, and No. 114 Eric Johnson. The Trojans also boast two ranked doubles pairs: No. 3 Hanfman/Quiroz and No. 53 DeVroome/ Johnson.
