San Diego, CA – The 72nd ranked University of Utah men’s tennis team ended their California road trip on a high note Thursday, clinching a 5-2 victory against the Yale Bulldogs (10-5) at the Barnes Tennis Center. Utah now holds a neutral site record of 2-1 and looks forwards to Pac-12 play next week at No. 41 Stanford and No. 28 California.
“This is a great team win,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu, “From start to finish we showed way better fight and attitude.”
Utah started off strong in doubles play, scoring a point behind victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Sophomore Parker McGuiness put the Utes up 2-0 at No. 2 singles after Yale’s Martin Svenning retired at 6-4, 3-0. Stefen Doehler earned the Bulldog’s first point as freshman Freddie McGeehan was forced to retire at 7-5, 3-0 at No. 3 singles.
Freshman Johan Jonhagen added to his winning streak at N0. 6 singles, defeating Alex Hagermoser 6-4, 6-3. With a 3-1 lead, Utah clinched the match following freshman Santiago Sierra‘s 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 victory over Daniel Faierman. The Utes split the two remaining matches: Cedric Willems earned a tightly contested point for Utah at No. 1 singles, and junior Matt Cowley lost a close three set bout.
The Utes open Pac-12 play on the road next week at Stanford on Friday, March 27 and at California on Saturday, March 28.
