Los Angeles, CA – The 72nd ranked University of Utah men’s tennis team (9-6) dropped a 4-1 decision Tuesday to the Loyola Marymount Lions at the LMU Tennis Center. Freshman Johan Jonhagen continued his impressive play, netting the Utes’ solo point and securing a doubles victory with Santiago Sierra.
After Senior Cedric Willems and Junior Matt Cowley fell to Loyola Marymount’s Errol Smith and Joat Farah at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, Sierra and Jonhagen secured a 6-4 victory over Otar Kordsachia and Luke Bohuslav at the No. 3 spot. At No. 2 doubles, Charles Boyce and Cristobal Rivera clinched the doubles point for the Lions by edging Parker McGuiness and Jamey Swiggart in a tiebreaker, 7-6(4).
Jonhagen gave the Utes a spark in singles play and tied that match at 1-1 by defeating Kordsachia, 6-2, 6-1. Utah struggled to maintain the momentum, dropping straight set matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions. At No. 1 singles, Willems fought back after losing the first set but fell short against LMU’s Boyce, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Play was suspended at No. 2 and No. 3 singles as the Lions cliched the match, 4-1.
