Salt Lake City, UT – For the second week in a row, freshman Johan Jonhagen clinched the win for the Utes, upsetting No. 45 ranked New Mexico, 4-1. The Utes improve to 9-5 on the year.
“What a great win. We really should congratulate both teams for competing unbelievably well and giving the fans a great show,” said head coach Roeland Brateanu. “We are very fortunate to come up with a win tonight, but I’m incredibly proud of our team. These are the type of matches that we would have lost earlier on in the season. It shows we are making great progress.”
The Utes started the evening off well, winning the doubles point with wins from No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Cedric Willems and Matt Cowley clinched the doubles point with a come from behind victory at the top spot, 7-5.
Freshman Freddie McGeehan continued his winning ways and put the Utes up 2-0, with a win at No. 4 singles over Rodolfo Jauregui, 6-4, 6-2. Mitch McDaniels quickly reduced New Mexico’s deficit to 2-1, by beating Matt Cowley, 7-6(3), 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
The match proved to be incredibly close, with all other singles matches entering a third set. Parker McGuiness, last week’s Pac-12 Player of the Week, eventually put the Utes up 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4 win and Johan Jonhagen clinched the match at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. The remaining matches were abandoned.
The Utes will leave Saturday morning for their spring break trip to southern California where they will face two more tough opponents in Loyola Marymount (Tuesday) and Yale (Thursday).
