Utah Splits Pair of Road Matches

101013_m-tennis-0092The University of Utah Men’s tennis team (8-2) played two matches in Denver, Colorado this weekend, defeating DePaul (1-4) 7-0 and falling to No. 52 Denver (5-2) 3-4.

The Utes played Denver on Friday in a tight contest that came down to the final match. Despite a victory from Devin Lane and  Ben Tasevac at #2 doubles, putting them at 8-0 for the season, Utah narrowly dropped the doubles point to Denver. After splitting the first two singles matches with Denver, #87 Slim Hamza tied up the match for the Utes by upsetting #83 Henry Craig 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Denver went back up 3-2 when Willems lost his match at the No. 3 position. Matt Cowley managed a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Eric Marbach at the fourth slot, making the score three all. The Pioneers seized the match deciding point when Ben Tasevac  suffered a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Roach at the No. 2 spot.

After a quick turn around, Utah met DePaul on Saturday. After sweeping doubles play, Devin Lane and Patrick Mayer rolled in singles, only dropping two games between them at #4 and #6 singles respectively. Cedric Willems and Matt Cowley kept the momentum in the Utes favor, as they both won in straight sets. Alejandro Medinilla and Slim Hamza capped the day for Utah, pulling out three set victories over their opponents and completing the sweep for the Utes.

Assistant coach Roeland Brateanu discussed the Ute’s play, “I thought we competed really well today after a tight loss yesterday. We really fought for one another.”

Utah heads home to prepare for a rivalry match on Saturday, February 22 vs BYU. The match will be held at Eccles Tennis Center and will start at 5 p.m. MT. There will be free pizza for all Utah fans!
