The University of Utah Men’s tennis team (5-1) fell to No. 45 Boise State (5-2) on Saturday night. After losing at No. 1 doubles, Ben Taesevac and Devin Lane fought back at No. 2 doubles from a 1-4 deficit to win 6-4. Boise State clinched the doubles point after defeating Alejandro Medinilla and Matt Cowley 6-4 at No. 3.
Cedric Willems shifted the momentum in favor of the Utes, defeating Garret Patton 6-3, 6-1. The Utes then fell to Boise State at No. 3 and No. 6 singles. Slim Hamza battled against #54 Andy Bettles, but came up short, 6-3, 6-4. Devin Lane shook off a loss in the first set tiebreak to win 5-6, 4-6, 10-4. Thomas Tenreiro won the final match for Boise State after a tight 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Alejandro Medinilla.
Assistant coach Roeland Brateanu summarized the day of play: “Congrats to Boise State for playing a very tough match. We are a lot better team than we showed today, but hopefully we learn from our experience and become a better team. We have a short turn around and have to play two tough matches tomorrow against Utah State and Seattle.”
The Utes will hit the court again Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center, facing Utah State at 12 p.m. MT and Seattle at 5 p.m. MT.
