For the second year in a row, the Utah State Open Championship final will be a duel between two Utes.
On Thursday evening, former Ute standout Phillip Eilers beat the No. 2 seeded Slim Hamza to be the first player to reach the finals. Eilers, the ITA Mountain Region Player of the Year and the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year in 2010, showed that his skills haven’t faded, overcoming the Tunisian Davis Cup player 7-5, 6-1.
Eilers will face Salt Lake City native Devin Lane in the finals, after Lane needed two days to overcome BYU freshman Jeremy Bourgeois in the semifinals, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Play was suspended Thursday evening due to darkness, with the score tied, 3-6, 6-1, 2-2.
Lane and Eilers will square off Saturday at 9.00am at Ivory Ridge Swim & Tennis Club to decide who will win the 2013 Ivory Homes Utah State Open Tennis Championships and follow in the footsteps of 2012 winner Dmytro Mamedov.
In doubles action, more success for Devin Lane, as he reached the finals with partner Slim Hamza after beating Spencer Smith and Phillip Eilers 6-1, 6-4. The Ute duo will face Utah’s volunteer assistant coach Graeme Cox and former Ute Nik Yip in the finals, after they beat Bryan Marchant and Brandon Owen 7-6(12), 6-3
The doubles final will be played Saturday at 12.00pm at Ivory Ridge Swim & Tennis Club.
