The first Utah – BYU match up of the 2013/2014 season is on hands, when rising senior Devin Lane will meet BYU freshman Jeremy Bourgeois (Australia) in the semifinals of the Utah State Championships on Thursday at 7pm.
Lane, a Salt Lake City native, reached the semifinals by ways of defeating Tanner Dance (6-1, 6-2) in the first round, and Paul Monson (6-0, 6-2) in the quarterfinals.
The other semifinal matchup will be between rising junior Slim Hamza and former Ute Phillip Eilers (Germany). Hamza dispatched Dylan Hansel (6-0, 6-1) in the first round and former Ute Nik Yip (7-5, 6-0) in the quarterfinals.
Eilers, who competed for the U from 2008 – 2010 and was the ITA Mountain Regional Player of the Year and Mountain West Conference Player of the Year in 2010, reached the semifinals only dropping a total of 4 games. In the first round he double bageled Tyler Holbrook and took care of Troy Benson, 6-4, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.
Both semifinal matches are scheduled for Thursday at 7pm at Liberty Park, weather permitting.
In doubles semifinals action, more Utes will see the court on Friday. Volunteer Assistant Coach Graeme Cox and Nik Yip partner up to play Bryan Marchant and former Ute standout Brandon Owen. The match is scheduled for 5.45pm at Liberty Park.
Devin Lane and Slim Hamza will face Phillip Eilers and Spencer Smith in the other semifinal match on Friday at 6pm at Liberty Park.
