The biggest news today comes out of Quintana Roo, Mexico where rising senior Alejandro Medinilla is set to compete in the first round of the main draw of the F12 Futures. Medinilla, who won a wild card tournament to earn a spot in the main draw, will face Mauricio Echazu (Peru) on Tuesday. The 24 year old Echazu has a 12-7 record on the ATP tour and obtained his highest ATP ranking in 2010 at No. 379. He is currently ranked No. 508.
It marks the first time Medinilla is competing in the main draw of a Futures event. Vamos Fezzie!
In Florida, rising redshirt sophomore Justin Archer has lost twice in the first round of the qualifying draw in the past two weeks. In Innsbrook, Florida he lost to blue chip recruit Nikola Samardzic (USA) 6-2, 6-4. In Indian Harbour Beach, Archer lost to Moritz Buerchner (Germany) 6-2, 6-3.
Cedric Willems is trying to continue his momentum from the end of the season, playing on the red clay in the Netherlands. The rising junior lost in the first round of the qualifying to Akash Wagh (India) in a tough 3-set match: 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. He is set to play in the F2 Future event in Alkmaar, the Netherlands next week.
