Pac-12 Athletes Once Again Victorious at the Olympics

Utes Shona Thorburn, Kim Smith and Michelle Plouffe represented Canada in women’s basketball at the 2012 London Olympic Games

With the 2012 London Olympic Games officially behind us and most Pac-12 institutions starting school today, it is time for a quick look back at a very successful Olympics for Pac-12 athletes.

In total Pac-12 athletes amassed 45 medals: 19 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze. If the Pac-12 Conference were to be a sovereign nation it would rank fifth behind Great Britain, Russia, China and the United States.

All Pac-12 institutions were represented and won medals in rowing, soccer, water polo, volleyball, beach volleyball, swimming & diving, track & field and tennis. In men’s tennis the double tandem of Bob and Mike Bryan won the gold medal.

Overall, the Pac-12 remains in fourth place on the all-time medal rankings behind the Soviet Union, Germany and the United States.
