Utes Drop 4-3 Decision to #55 Denver

DENVER, Colo. – The University of Utah men’s tennis team (7-4) suffered a tight 4-3 loss to 55th-ranked Denver (7-7) Friday at the Gates Tennis Center. Utah earned the doubles point while sophomore Alejandro Medinilla and freshman Slim Hamza earned singles victories from the Nos. 6 and 3 singles positions, respectively. The Utes are now 1-4 against ranked opponents.

“We played a tough match against a very good Denver team today,” said head coach F.D. Robbins. “It was good for us to win the doubles point. We were very close on winning a third singles match but couldn’t come up with one today.”

In doubles play, the duo of senior Benito Suriano and junior Dmytro Mamedov dropped an 8-3 decision to Enej Bonin and Jens Vorkefeld at the No. 1 spot.

Hamza and sophomore Devin Lane then followed with an 8-6 victory at the third slot over Yannick Weihs and Othar Kordsachia.

The Utes then netted the doubles point when Medinilla and freshman Ace Matias topped Max Krammer and Fabio Biasion, 8-6, from the No. 2 position.

Despite going into singles with a 1-0 advantage, the score quickly tied at 1-1 when Suriano fell 6-1, 6-1 to Bonin at the top spot.

Medinilla then put the Utes back up at 2-1 after netting a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Alex Clinkenbeard at the No. 6 position.

Hamza then made the score 3-1 in favor of Utah when he downed Vorkefeld, 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. With the match clinching point in reach, the Utes then suffered four straight singles losses.

Mamedov was defeated by Weihs at the No. 2 slot, 7-5, 6-3, while Lane then fell to Kordsachia at the fifth position, 6-4, 6-3.

The Pioneers then clinched the match at 4-3 when freshman Rafael Davidian suffered a tight 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 loss to Krammer.

The Utes return to the Gates Tennis Center Saturday to take on Sacramento State in a neutral match at 12 p.m. Utah then closes out its road slate Monday at Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo., at 1 p.m.
